An Immense Crowd Gather at the Depot to see the Train Pass.
At Murfreesboro, Oct 17. At an early hour this morning an immense crowd began to pour into the city, all bent on seeing President Cleveland and his lovely wife. The exact hour at which the train would pass could not be ascertained, hence for more than an hour before it did pass, the depot platform and all the adjacent ground was filled. Even the tops of freight cars, watertanks, lumber piles and house-tops were covered with parties eager to see the first lady and gentleman of the land.
A few minutes before 10 o'clock the train bearing Maj. Thomas and party sped through without stopping. This was a signal for a turning on of the whistles in the factories, machine shops, gins and sawmills and the ringing of the different bells of the city. The expectant crowd had only a few minutes more to wait before th Presdential train appeared. The applause was deafening as the train came to a halt and the President stepped out on the rear platform. This had harley died away before Mrs. Cleveland advanced to the door. Her beauty and grace at once electrified the crowd, and another tremendous round of applause was given. Many scrambled to the side of the car and shook hands with the President, but there were hundreds who had come many miles to catch a glimpse of the Chief Magistrate, and still failed to see him, owing to the large crowd.
In the front coach we recognized the bright and smiling face of Miss Mannie Baxter and, as the coach passed swiftly by, we heard several say: "There she is!" "Where?" "Gone by now." "Is she pretty?" "Yes, she is beautiful," all the time thinking they had seen Mrs. Cleveland, when, in fact, they had gotten a glimpse of one of Nashville's most charming young ladies - Miss Mannie Baxter. The stop only lasted a few minutes, but a subject to be discussed for many years to come has been left behind.
