Henry Hardin and Catherine Cox:
Henry was born 18 September 1765 near Raleigh in Johnston County, North Carolina. (now Wake County) With his parents he moved to Wilkes County at about age 15. He married Catherine Cox ca 1785. He first appears on tax records in 1790 District #4. He owned much land in what became Ashe County in 1799 and lived at Beaver Creek. He was a large slave owner and his will shows concern for each one of them. Catherine died 3 February 1847. Henry died 23 October 1856, both at Beaver Creek.

Item: I give and bequeath to my beloved wife, Caty Hardin all my money on hand at my decease and as much of my household and kitchen furniture as she may desire, my Negroes Dick and young Hannah, for and during her natural life and after her death to be disposed of as herein after directed.
Item: I give and bequeath of my daughter Sarah Parsons widow of George Parsons, Dec., a negro man named Jack during her life or widowhood, and after her death or marriage to belong to her three youngest sons that are now in being share and share alike.
Item: I give and bequeath to my daughter Mary Brooks, one negro girl named Liza, and her increase during her life then to belong to four of her children, (ie) Andrew, Cynthia, Peggy and George.
Item: I give and bequeath to my daughter Cynthia Gambill one negro girl named Celia and her increase to her heirs.
Item: I give and bequeath to my daughter Jane Ray wife of James Ray my negroes Henderson and Lucy and her increase during her life and at her death to belong to all her children share and share alike.
Item: I give and bequeath to my son John Hardin, one negro boy named Isaac.
Item: I give and bequeath to my daughter Elizabeth Baker, wife of Phillip Baker, dec. one negro girl named Rhoda and her increase (which girl is in her possession) and also a negro man named Dick and if Dick should outlive my daughter Elizabeth to go to her heirs the said Dick to go the said Elizabeth Baker’s heirs after the death of my wife Caty.
Item: I give and bequeath to my daughter Nancy Bertie two negroes, the one named Simon the other Sam to be her right and property to dispose of as she pleases to help raise her children and at her death to belong to her heirs if not sold or made way with some other way.
Item: I give and bequeath to my son James W. Hardin my negroes Jacob, Abram and Mary.
Item: I give and bequeath to my daughter Ann Parsons wife of Soloman Parsons my negro named Pat, to her then heirs after her death.
Item: I give and bequeath to my daughter Susan Gillispie wife of William Gillispie one negro girl named Sarah to her then heirs after her death.
Item: I give and bequeath to my son Richard T. Hardin my negroes named Sterling, Tilda and Sandra, also all my farming tools of every kind and blacksmith tools and one wagon yoke of oxen and one choice breed mare, to him and to his lawful heirs after his death.
Item: I give and bequeath to my grandson Hamilton Ray one negro girl named Milly.
Item: My will is that old Jim and old Hannah be taken care of by some of my children and be allowed to live together with them who they may choose or be sold amongst the children if my executors think proper and the proceeds divided amongst all my children equally.
Item: My desire is for some of the children to take Sue and her mother Rachel and after Rachel’s death to sell Sue if she will bear any price and divide the proceeds and all other property to me belonging not herein bequeathed my executors are requested to sell and divide the proceeds amongst all my children share and share alike.
Item: I give and bequeath to my daughter Caty Southers, wife of Thomas Southers my negroes Sinda and young Hannah after the death of my wife Caty to her then heirs after her death.

I do appoint my three sons John Hardin, James W. Hardin and Richard T. Hardin my executors to this my last Will and Testament.
And I do hereby utterly disallow, revoke and also annul all and every other former testament wills, legacies, bequest and executions by me in any way before named willed and bequeathed ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my last Will and Testament in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this the 16th day of June A.D. 1846
