WorldConnect Database:
Notes from Debbie Kleinschmidt: Samuel Furnish and Sarah Roberts were married March 6, 1782 in Culpepper County, Virginia by Minister George Eve, a Baptist Minister. Samuel was among those Orange County, Virginia Petitioners who plead with the House of Delegates to limit service in the State Militia to three months only (27 February 1781) and he is listed in Zachary Bumley's census report for Orange County, Virginia 1785 as the head of a household comprised of "6 white souls."
Carolyn Furnish Jennett gives the petition to the Virginia legislator is dated 14 March 1781 stating the hardship their service in the militia for their service in the militia for 18 months would work on themselves and their families was signed by Samuel and his brothers. The petition was rejected and he served with the 7th Virginia Regiment. Carolyn cites her source as DAR Magazine, Volume 94.
Carolyn further gives the following: Appraisal of Samuel's estate was made 23 january 1796 and the Probate Records of Harrison County, Kentucky reveal only that Sarah, widow of Samuel, was appointed admistrator of the estate. (Source: Harrison County, Kentucky Index to Estate Settlements, microfilm University of Kentucky Library, Lexington, Kentucky. Her name continues to appear on the tax lists of that county each year from 1796 through 1811. In 1808 she had living with her a male over 21 and a male between the age of 16 and 21. The Harrison County, Kentucky Census of 1810 includes her name (a female over 45) as head of a household with one male age 10 to 16 and one male and one female between the ages of 16 and 26. The tax lists revealing that Joel Furnish in 1809 was of age, apparently it was he living with his mother. The other male probably was Thomas as he was first taxed in 1810. The female age 16 to 26 was Sarah's daughter, Polly.
