Notes from Debbie Kleinschmidt: James is the youngest son of John Furnish Sr. James was drafted into the Virginia State Militia twice during the Revolutionary War. First he served int he 5th Regiment for a period of three months enlisting 1 September 1780 as a private in Captain Benjamin Johnson's Company, Colonel Holt Richardson's Virginia Regiment. Then he served in the 4th Regiment starting in the May 1781, again for three months as a private in Captain Richard Webb's Company, Colonel Edmonds Virginia Regiment and was at the battle of Jamestown. He as well as his brothers Jacob, Samuel and Thomas, signed the Petition from Orange County Militiamen addressed to the Virginia House of Delegates February 27, 1781.

James married (1 )Esseignor (Assinor) Wells, 16 Jul 1795, Harrison Co KY and (2) Nancy Goins, 1 Oct 1820, Gallatin Co KY. There were 11 children by the first wife, 9 more by Nancy - the eldest child born in 1796, the younged in 1840.
