In the manuscript collection of Samuel Willett Comstock I found the following data on George Cook Comstock's family. Lyndon W. Comstock carried on a lengthy correspondence and included the following facts:

George C. Comstock's wife Miranda later said his middle name was Chasteler. One of his grandsons, Carlton, also had that middle name. And Lyndon M. Comstock says that was George's middle name in a questionnaire, yet it's stuck in that official version that George's middle name was Cook. Now George's father-in-law was George Cook, so there would have been a good reason. Also, an earlier letter, 1886, Lyndon W. Comstock gave his father's name as Dr. George Cook Comstock I have no idea where the name Chasteler or Chastler could have come from--I find no record of such a name in the U.S. before 1895.
