Dr. John W. Comfort

(1822 - 6 Aug 1854)

1850 Census with Harriet & William; also an 8 year old girl, Ella P. Rine, born in Lousiana. Occupation is physician. Joseph A. Comfort, his brother, age 21, born in KY and working as a Clerk lives with him.
The Whitsitt book also said he settled in New Orleans where he perished of yellow fever, and a newspaper account below certainly supports this fact.

However, a letter posted by a descendant of a cousin of John W.'s stated that Dr. John Comfort commanded as Captain, Co A, 5th MS Infantry and was killed at the battle of Corinth/Pittsburgh Landing - obviously a different John Comfort! Joseph M. Comfort of Carroll Co had a son John H. who was 14 in 1850, 22 in 1860, perhaps it's this John. There were two John A. Comforts living in Attala Co MS in 1860, one was age 23 and appeared to be living with an older brother David S. Comfort, age 33. The other John A. Comfort of Attala was age 22 and living with W. W. Dunn, age 65. Any of these three would have been good candidates for the John Comfort killed during the Civil War. In fact, army records show that a John A. Comfort died circa 1862 - but he was on leave and ill at home. It's obvious that there's been a genealogy conflabulation of the John Comforts.

From THE AMERICAN CITIZEN of Canton, MS on 12 Aug 1854. Died in city of New Orleans of yellow fever on Sun 6 Aug, Dr. John W. Comfort, a citizen of that place, late of Koscuisko and once a citizen of this county.
