Herald of Freedom and Torch Light, newspaper, Washington Co, MD. 15 Apr 1863
On Saturday, March 21st, at the house of Mr. John W. Breathed, near the College of St. James, two most estimable Christian ladies entered into their rest, Mrs. Kitty Breathed, in her 73d year, widow of the late Isaac Breathed of Hancock, in this county; and Mrs. Elizabeth Snodgrass, of Martinsburg, Va. The two ladies were mother and daughter; and in the one day, while on a visit to the home of their son and brother, they were called away to their last home. We believe, the change to them was a blessed one. Their lives had been a most meet preparation for the summons that met the one in a venerable old age, the other in the prime of an useful, valuable life. But the concurrence of two such events in the same family and home, in the same day, was as rare as it was a deep affliction. The aged mother expired at 2 o'clock AM; the daughter just before midnight the ensuing night. Old age, chronic disease, might well account for the decease of Mrs. Breathed though this came suddenly at last. Mrs. Snodgrass, then debilitated by a severe attack of acute disease, sank under the shock of her mother's unexpected death, and just before the same day ended, she breathed her last. The two lay in death, side by side, in the home of the son and brother; and were thence taken together on Tuesday the 24the day of March to the family burying place at St. Thomas' Church, Hancock.
The venerable mother might seem to have finished her work; but with a mind unimpaired and a heart as fresh as ever, she was to her children and grand children a parent not only beloved and revered for the past, but still most trusted and honored as a wise counsellor and guide. Her daughter who so quickly followed her, was in the very prime of life, - a wise, gentle, faithful mother, who sudden removal leaves her children parentless. it added to their sorrow that there was not time to call any of them to their mother's dying bedside.
Very strange indeed to human sight are such orderings of God's Providence. it is not strange or sad that the godly should be called home. There was here the full consolation of hope for the departed. There was great beauty, too in the closeness and tenderness of the tie between mother and daughter that refused to be severed even in death. but it was startling to turn from the one just gone, to the other just going hence. It was very sad to see the hearts of survivors, thus shocked and grieved, yet there was comfort and hope for them in the assurance that Holy examples and faithful prayers die not....
