Dr. Richard Lyles

Said to have been a surgeon in the Revolutionary army.

His wife is said to have been a Miss Jones, of Prince George's County.

Richard Lyles applied for a Revolutionary pension but it was rejected: #R6543
He was then living in Logan Co Ky and the application is dated 14 Oct 1835. He was then 77, Sept last. He volunteered in the early part of 1781. , when the Regt of Gen. Anthony Wayne was moving from Anapolis through the county of Prince Georges in Maryland in which county he was then resided. He accompained the Regiment to Williamsburg in Virginia. There he remained until the capturing of Cornwallis at Yorktown on 19th October. He acted in the capacity of Surgeon's Mate in the Hospital at that place. Doct. Benjamin Boyd was associate mate. There were two hospitals in Williamsburg - one of the sick, the other for the wounded. Doct. Treat was Surgeon of the first; Doct. Titton of the second. He continued in service for about nine months. Previously he served as a private in the company of Mark Marine Duvall from Prince George Co in the Regt of Gen. Smallwood, for two months. This was the winter of 1780.
He was born on 29 Sep 1757 in Prince Georges County, Maryland, and has a record of that. He later removed to Montgomery Co MD where he lived about 18 months, then to Logan Co KY his present residence. He obtained a certificate for his service which is now lost. The only pay he ever received was $24.
He is known in his present neighborhood by Wm. G. Warren, Wm. J. Morton, Marmaduke Morton, Thos. M. Smith, etc. He having recently removed to his present place of residence which is very distant from the former one he unable to procure testimony of any living witness. Signed: Richd. Lyles
Walter Jones & John Fickter appeared before the Logan Co Court but their testimony is not reprinted. Jones said "between forty and fifity years" - he might have been a relative of Lyles' wife.
Dated 29 Apr 1854:
Archibald N. Lyles made testimory that he was the only heir of Richard Lyles, dec'd and was of the the county of McCracken, state of Kentucky. He appointed Caleb White of Maysville KY and D. D. Addison of Washington City his attorneys to represent the claim of Richard Lyles for any amount of Revolutionary pension.
Typed response to an inquiry in 1951 states that his claim was not allowed as he did not render six months service in a military capacity as required. He acted in a civil capacity while a surgeon's mate.
