William Joseph Bowles

(Ca 1772 - )

Questionable relationship. I'm not sure he was a son.

Said to have married Nancy Rolfe Bolling, daughter of John Bolling and Mary Jefferson, in turn a daughter of Peter Jefferson and brother to President Thomas Jefferson. Marriage agreement signed by John Bolling & John M. Bowles. 27 Dec 1800, Franklin Co VA. This record is often cited as proof that John M. Bowles that married Frances Bolling were brother and sister to the bride and groom. Frances could have easily been a cousin.

What is more than weird about the above is that the wedding may very well have taken place after the death of the John Bolling who was married to Mary Jefferson. Many Jefferson researchers do not have a Nancy Rolfe Bolling as a daughter to Mary Jefferson. They had a daughter Ann who married a Lewis. Since Nancy is a nickname for Ann - it's doubtful they would have had both an Ann and a Nancy. And in February of 1800, John Bolling, husband of Mary Jefferson was believed to be in Chesterfield Co VA, because he wrote his Will - they never lived in Franklin Co or Henry Co where John M. Bowles married Frances Bolling.
