John M. Bowles

(Ca 1775 - 1832)

John Bowles and Frances Bolling may not have been the parents of Nancy but it's the most logical place for Nancy at this time. Further research is needed.

A John M. Bowles served in the War of 1812 Infantry under Capt John Williams [possibly his son-in-law] - said to have served from 23 Jan 1814 to 22 Jan 1815 and received $8 bounty due. John M. Bowls is on the 1812 Warren Co Tax List of Richard Cantrell along with John "G", Harden, & James Williams.

I also found a John Bowles who served in Coffee's Regt, Cavalry, West Tennessee Volunters. And a John Bowls of Dyer's Regt, Cavalry and Mounted Gunmen, Tennessee Vols.

A Forum post said that he fought at the Battle of Horsebend [that should be Horseshoe Bend] in Alabama during the Creek Wars, 1812-1815.

Submitted by Clydene W. Cannon

Clydene listed several land records as proof of family relationships. None of these records actually state a relationship but they do place all the right people in the right place at the rights time.

There was possibly at least one other son not listed here - I have seen both a James and a William suggested, but without further information. There was a James Bowles who served as a chain carrier for one of John's surveys. The son John is thought to have married about 1822 so he would not be the 15-20 year old listed in the 1830 census. However, I am not at all sure that this young John belongs in this family - in 1850 he stated he had been born in Mississippi; many of his children were born in Alabama. He did name a daughter Fannie, presumably for Frances.
