WorldConnect:
" Was Col. Ed Richardson of New Orleans. Was called 'Cotton King' because he owned the largest cotton plantation in the world. Was director of the 'Cotton States Exposition' in New Orleans in 1884. His daughter Sue was queen of the Mardi Gras carnival when only 13 years old. It seems that the man who contributes most to the expenses names the queen. When son Jim learned that Col. Ed must name the queen, he persuaded his father to let Sue be the queen. She was well grown, and when dressed for the part seemed 'a real young lady.'" - Notes by Mrs. Stacy, 1939, found in collection of Katherine Foster Colley, probably inherited from her father.
