Richard married Rebecca Downe, 15 Apr 1683. He married (2) Elizabeth Martin, 22 Jul 1657. Richard was a merchant and Mayor of Barnstaple - he carried on trade with New England, as shown by the Port Books in the Public Record Office, London. He had at least 8 or 9 daughters from the two marriages, but only one survived to adulthood - Elizabeth (1660-1688) who married Arnoll Beare. She inherited the manor of Exbourne which was then inherited by her only child Elizabeth Beare (1683/4-1712) who married the Rev. Francis Tucker of Landkey. When Elizabeth Beare Tucker died, her only child, Elizabeth Tucker (1705-1765) inherited the manor - Elizabeth Tucker married Philip Lethbridge.

Richard Harris, merchant, wrote his will 18 Jan 1664/5. The manor of Exbourne was given to his daughters and the heirs of their bodies. If none survived, one moiety of the manor was to go to the eldest son of his sister Edwards, the other half to go to the eldest son of his cousin Priscilla Fairchild of Barnstaple. His wife Elizabeth to have the home farm, called Portsmouth and after her decease to go to his daughters. He left many other bequests including 10#'s to his sister Edwards. Executors to be his brother, John Downe, cousin William Westcombe, brother John Greade, and Thomas and Nicholas Dennis. Proved 2 May 1665.
