Elizabeth Pratt

(Ca 1790 - 1827)

Elizabeth was the daughter of James Pratt. She certainly died prior to Nov 1847, when her heirs sold land that was given to her by her father. Her son John, said his mother died when he was 16; he was born 1811 - so that would place her death at 1827 and John Huff married again in 1832. Another of her sons, William Huff, stated in a court document that he and his siblings were sons and daughters of Elizabeth Pratt who was never married to the said John Huff, deceased, or to anyone else.

In 1795, three Pratt children were bound out - Elizabeth [no age given], Joseph, age 2 or 3, and Suckey, recorded as age six - their aunt Mary's child. Elizabeth was first bound to John Davidson who soon departed and then to Enos Mitchell of Bedford Co. The records of both Elizabeth and Joseph seem doubtful regarding their father and in fact there is a blank for his given name in the indenture of Elizabeth. Both John Davidson and Enos Mitchell were, however, neighbors of Mary Pratt.

Now, it is known that Elizabeth Pratt had a son Henry, born 12 Jun 1809. Family traditions have suggested Henry was in actuality a Huff, but the records indicate it likely that Elizabeth Pratt and John Huff had not yet met in 1809. However, one of the family lines believed that Henry's father had been a "DeWitt".

No DeWitts ever lived near Elizabeth Pratt, but several Witt families were in the area of Bedford Co where Elizabeth was bound out to Enos Mitchell. Thorough research by descendant of Henry, Warren C. Pratt, as described in the NGS Quarterly, June 2012, has eliminated most of the male Witt candidates as possible father for Henry, but one Henry Witt stands out as most likely. Young Henry, not yet 21, was taxed on 1 Mar 1809 and died soon after. In fact, a Witt Bible record cites Henry Witt's death on the same day that Henry Pratt was born.

By 1809. James Pratt was in Floyd Co KY where in 1810 he married Mary Martin. Elizabeth's Aunt Mary had died about 1806. Elizabeth apparently left Bedford Co for Montgomery Co - perhaps during her pregnancy. There was a John Pratt living in Montgomery Co who was in all probability a relative although the relationship has never been determined.

1810 Census. Montgomery Co VA. Elizabeth Pratt, son under 10, she is 16-26.
Next to her is John Huff - 1 male age 26-45.

By 1820, Elizabeth was living with John Huff in Floyd Co KY. According to her son John Huff, Jr. she died when he was 16, or about 1827.
