Individual Details

James Pratt

(25 Mar 1764 - 8 Oct 1854)

James was the son of Thomas Pratt who died in Culpeper Co, VA about 1815. Thomas was son of Jonathan Pratt who had died in Culpeper in 1781, whose known sons are James, Jonathan, and Thomas. James Pratt apparently had two children - Elizabeth and Joseph - by an unknown wife, who perhaps died soon after the birth of Joseph.

James fought in the Revolution, enlisting in place of his father, Thomas Pratt, in March of 1781, Culpeper Co. He recounted his residences in 1833, when he applied for a pension. He had returned to Culpeper after the War, but later lived in Campbell Co VA for about four years, then in Bath County for two years, then had moved to Floyd Co, KY. Tax records exist for his residency in Culpeper, 1785, 1786, and a Francis Gray paid his tax in 1787 and 1789. James paid taxes in Campbell Co 1791, 1792 and in Bath County from 1800 to 1803.
See Rev War Application W.9599
Application made 6 Dec 1833, Lawrence Co KY, James Pratt, age 69 (b. 1764). He entered service in March of 1781 as substitute for his father Thomas Pratt who was drafted in the 4th Division, Col. Allcok his colonel; Capt Wood his Capt.; Campbell was the ensign. This was county Culpeper, in Virginia. He marched from Culpeper Courhouse through Albemarle & Orange to Richmond but did not enter the town because of small pox left by the British. He was discharged about the 4th of July. He was immediately called back into service in the 5th Division, under Capt Henry Towles, Col. Allcock still in command. They arrived at Little York in Oct of 1781 where he was employed digging entrenchments. He received a discharge from this second tour, 10 Oct 1781. The discharges were burnt up in his home when he resided in Floyd Co. About 12-15 days after he arrived home he heard of the surrender of Lord Cornwallis. He knows of no person that can testify to his service.
He was born 25 Mar 1764, Culpeper, VA. He know longer has a record. He was in Culpeper when he served. He lived in Campbell Co about 4 years, in Bath County, VA about 2 years, he removed to Kentucky in the limits of what was then Floyd Co where he lived until 4 years ago when he removed to Lawrence, KY. On his first tour in went in place of his father Thomas Pratt. On his second tour he was a drafted soldier. Those of his neighborhood that can testify to his veracity are Philip Williams and Robert Williams. (they did testify)
1 Nov 1858. Rebecca Pratt of Carter Co KY, aged 66 years applied for widow's pension. She was married to James Pratt on 1 Jul 1827, Floyd Co, KY. James died 8 Oct 1854 in Carter Co.
Rebecca was awarded an increase as of, 27 Jul 1868.

In Campbell County, James was living near the widow Mary Pratt, believed to be the widow of his uncle James. They were near the Bedford County line and in fact Mary's husband had land holdings in Bedford Co. In all probability he gave his two young children to Mary to care for as she also had a daughter near their age.

By 1809. James Pratt was in Floyd Co KY where in 1810 he married Mary Martin. Elizabeth's Aunt Mary had died about 1806. Elizabeth apparently left Bedford Co for Montgomery Co - perhaps during her pregnancy with her first son, Henry Pratt. There was a John Pratt living in Montgomery Co who was in all probability a relative although the relationship has never been determined.
