Joseph W. Maddox

( - 8 Jul 1859)

One researcher states that there was a Joseph Maddox in Somerset MD, born maybe about 1760, died 1823 in Putnam Co GA - 4 of his 5 sons left the state for Hancock County GA, where related families were living. He has been proposed as the father of Joseph W.. He seems too old to be the Joseph Maddox that married Elizabeth Moore, 1813, Jasper Co GA (this was this man - with a young second wife). A FindAGrave post describing his marriages and children does not a son named Joseph at all. It's apparent that more than Joseph Maddox was in Georgia in the early 1800's

A Joseph Maddock, Jr. married Rebecca Henshaw, 6 Mar 1784, Cane Creek, Orange NC - some have placed him as father of this Joseph - he was born 1749 in Delaware and died 1816, Georgia. The Cane Creek Maddox family had come from Pennsylvania and were Quakers. They seem to have been well documented for several generations prior. Joseph Sr. whose wife was Rachel Dennis requested the Georgia Governor for a reserve of land - they received 12,000 acres and named their new community Wrightsborough. Wrightsborough was in Columbia Co at the time - now it's McDuffie. Approximately 70 families left NC in 1767-8 for the settlement. They remained in this area through the Rev War as neutrals. From the 1790s through 1805, as slave-holding families moved in, the Quakers left for Tennessee and Ohio. Seems a bit of a stretch to tie members of this family to Alabama.

However, claims are made that the Joseph Maddox who married Mary Vaughn, 1814, Columbia Co GA, was a son of Joseph and Rebecca above. I did find a list of residents of Wrightsborough, compiled from various sources, which did include Joseph Maddock Jr. who married Rebecca Hinshaw and indicates he was a son of Joseph Sr. and Rachel. Joseph Jr. was born 1749 in Delaware, died 1816 in Georgia. Rebecca was dismissed from the Quaker membership. Certainly they were no longer practicing Quakers. They obtained the normal marriage license and Joseph & Mary are said to have received pension from the state of Georgia for his War of 1812 service as a private with Capt. Willoughby Barton's Company, GA Militia. A census indicates that Joseph W. Maddox was born 1802, but that would have made him only 12 at his marriage which is not reasonable, and he would not have been serving in the War of 1812.

Another theory was found that the Joseph Maddox who married Mary Vaughn was instead the son of Samuel Maddox and his wife Rachel Frances Jones. Samuel was said to be another son of Joseph and Rachel Dennis. A fairly decent online database shows that Samuel was born about 1750 in Delaware (Newark MM, New Castle) and died 4 Aug 1814, Preble Co, Ohio. He married Rachel Jones on 5 Mar 1774 in Wrightsboro. Their son Joseph is said born 6 Nov 1775, and died 1801 in Wrightsboro. That would certainly eliminate any possibility he was the Joseph that married Mary Vaughn in 1814.

Joseph first bought land in Bibb County on May 1, 1826. Joseph and part of the family shows up on the Bibb County 1850 Census: Joseph born about 1802 in SC, Mary born about 1803 in GA and 4 of their children; Martha age 23, Jesse A. 18, James 16, Joseph W. 14. I believe that census to be incorrect on ages for Joseph and Mary. In 1860 Mary says she is 66, and in 1840 Joseph is in the 40 to 50 age column and as is Mary. Plus if they married in 1814, would probably have been born before 1800.
My note: Or the Joseph & Mary in Bibb Co, are NOT the same couple that married in Columbia Co GA in 1814....

1850 Census. E.C.River, Bibb Co, AL, Hh 764
