JACOB JOY

(Abt 1645 - Bef Jan 1691)



Jacob Joy received a grant from the town of Guilford, 23 Feb 1669/70 but soon after removed to Fairfield where he was invited to settle as a blacksmith. In 1672 he removed to Killingworth where he also plied his trade as blacksmith. His brother Joseph moved with his to Fairfield and Killingworth.

Jacob Joy was invited to settle in F. as a blacksmith, an occupation in colonial days, honored & respected by the highest dignitaires of the town. a village blacksmith in those days, had his place on the Meeting-house Green, near the church, & combined the art of locksmith & gunsmith with that of horse shoeing. He removed to Kenilworth, where on the 23 of May 1672 he m. Elizabeth d. of William Spencer of Hartford, & widow of William Wellman of New London & Kenilworth. Their children were Deborah b. 23 Feb 1673; Jacob 14 Mar 1675; Walter 14 Aug 1677 & Mary 17 Sep 1680. Deborah m. 19 Nov 1691 Andrew Ward III, son of Andrew II of Kenilworth & grandson of Andrew Ward I of F. Mary m. 1699 Peter, son of Andrew Ward II of K.
Joseph Joy of F. before setting out on an expedition against the French via Albany to Canada made the following disposition of his estate to his loving cousins i.e. nieces and nephews. To Joseph Benit, 5 #'s & two sheep; to Deborah Joy, cow & calf, to Mary Joy, his black two year old heifer, & to Walter Joy, son of his brother Jacob, all the rest of his estate. Jacob & Joseph Joy therefore, were either of the Boston or Hingham Joy family


Births of the children of Jacob & Elizabeth are recorded in the Killingworth Vital Records.

Jacob Joy bought land in Killingworth on 7 Dec 1673. He is also recorded as selling land to John Kelsey which was formerly William Wellmans - Wellman probably his wife Elizabeth's first husband.

Connecticut Court of Assistants held at Hartford, May 27th, 1679
"Jacob Joy moveing this court (that in regard the lands of Wm Wellman are Inventoryed in the lumpe) they would be pleased to appoynt some to apprize the perticular percells so as they may make up the totall. This court have nominated & appoynted Lnt. Henry Cranne & Samuell Buell to attend this service."

Inventory of his estate taken on 29 Jan 1690/1. It mentions a house in Killingworth. The widow Elizabeth made oath and was to administer with Capt. Matthew Sherwood and James Bennett.
