Judge Robert Jefferson Alexander was the 4th son, 9th child of Judge James Alexander (a soldier of the American Revolution, Pennsylania Militia, born 1757, died May 11, 1852; and Isabell Ross, born 1767, died March 30, 1845; both natives of Scotland and buried in the Alexander Cemetery in Pease Twp, Belmont Co, O.). He was a graduate of Jefferson College, Cannonsburg, PA; a lawyer by profession; twice elected prosecuting attorney of Belmont County and was the first common pleas judge of Belmont, Guernsey and Monroe Counties under the new constitution of Ohio (1851). He took a great interest in fruit growing, agricultural and educational matters, being president of the County Agricultural Society, and for many years county examiner, and president of the school board of St. Clairsville.
His father and grandfather, both named James Alexander, served in the Revolutionary War with the Pennsylvania Militia, as with the Maryland troops did his uncle Andrew Alexander, who subsequently was sheriff of Baltimore.
