Mexico, MO, March 26 - Captain Leander C. Mitchell an old Mississippi and Missouri River steamboat captain, for many years a contractor in railway work, died here this morning of acute bronchitis at the age of 77 years. He leaves a widow and two children, Mrs. R. M. White of this city, and Mrs. Charles Hodges of Carthage. He was a brother of the late John J. Michell of St. Louis, who built the Chicago and Alton Railroad, and who died a multimillionaire a month age.
Captain Mitchell was born in Ohio in 1826, and has lived in Alton, Ill., Louisiana and Mexico, MO, since early manhood. When the C & Aterminated at Alton he had the contract to transport freight and passengers from Alton to St. Louis. during the war his boats were confiscated by the Government for the purpose of transporting troops from Illinois points to the South. He was intrusted with the work of securing the rights of way for the Chicago and Alton when the extension was made from this city to Kansas City twenty-five years ago and also contracted to transfer the cars over the Missouri at Glasgow for several years before the bridge was built there.
Funeral services will be conducted from St. Paul's Episcopal Church in this city Sunday afternoon, by which time R. M. White, a son-in-law, will have returned from a trip to Cuba.
