HAMILTON CEMETERY, UNION COUNTY, TENNESSEE
The Hamilton Cemetery, Union Co, TN is one of the oldest rural cemeteries in the county - originally on the famr of William Hamilton who was present in 1794. William was a captain in the first militia when Grainger Co was formed in 1796, and on the 1799 tax list with 2029 acres. (Union Co was not formed until 1856) Some of William Hamilton's land remained in the family until after 1900. Few markers survive and those that do are weathered. There is one for Alexander Hamilton, who died Feb 9 1852, age 72. Stones nearby are like for his father who died 1827-8 and his mother (her name unknown) but probably died between 1810 and 1825. Susanna is likely there, as is his brother William Jr. who died 23 Sep 1863. Alexander Jr. died 16 Oct 1863 in a smallpox epidemic - it may have claimed his mother and uncle William as well.
Alexander Hamilton Jr. married Cassandra Lay, who parents are also buried Hamilton Cemetery. Their markers are legible. William Lay, Dec 5, 1795-Mar 28, 1872. Sara Capps Lay, Jan 14, 1797-Oct 5, 1860. Three of Alexander's sons migrated to Missouri with their McBee and Lay relatives. The remaining Tennessee Hamiltons are descended from the six sons of Alexander Jr. and Cassandra.
