He married (2) 6 Aug 1863, Yadkin Co, Mary Jones Coltrane, his first wife's sister. He married (3) the widow Parsley of Ashe Co NC.

By 1828, Denson had moved to what was then Macon Co, but now Cherokee Co, NC [formed in 1839]. Denson did missionary work preaching to the Cherokee and establishing several churches there. It Then states that Denson had Native American blood from his grandmother Betty Pledge Poindexter who according to family tradition was 1/4 Cherokee [the old family myth]. Denson was a Missionary Baptist preacher and a farmer. He organized several churches in the Surry Co [Yadkin after 1850] area after leaving Macon Co.
Denson's first wife, Sarah Jones, died 12 Jan 1863. She is said to be the first person buried at the Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery. (He is buried there as well.)Denson then married Sarah's sister who lived only a short time. He married third, the widow Jane Parsley.

One of Denson's daughters, Nancy E. Martin, applied for Cherokee enrollment, 24 Aug 1896. She listed her children [adult or married children were supposed to apply for themselves.]

Nancy signed with her mark. Most of the applicants were able to sign their names.
The Poindexter book states that Nancy Elizabeth Poindexter, b. 26 Jan 1830, married Reps Martin, 20 Sep 1848, Surry Co. Their children were Curlista Jane who married (1) James Matthews & (2) Gid Nicholson; Francis Hampton Martin who married Alice Tomlinson, Ruel Denson Martin, married Mary Elizabeth Rich, Leroy Alexander Martin who married Cora Alice Poindexter, Preston Jones Martin who married Mary Frances Elizabeth Dean, Louzania J. Martin who married Job L. Scott, Dr. Wilson Columbus Martin who married Frances Cornelia Eaton, Virgil Alexander Martin who married Cora Ward, and Doctor Green Martin who married Cora. All of the children were married, most for years and had children.

[she had married Robert L. Poindexter, son of William A. who was a son of Thomas H. Poindexter, another son of William Pledge, so they were 2nd cousins]
