Individual Details
Mark H. Bird
(4 Aug 1822 - 3 Jul 1882)
Mark Bird was a son of Capt. Abraham Bird Jr. and Catherine Fry. Mark and Arminta were second cousins, once removed or twice removed - kin in two different ways.
Mark Bird listed as one of the scholars of Frank Hayden in a log school house, 1829, along with William [K.] Fry.
In 1850, Mark & Araminta were still living in Marion Co MO in Miller Township. Mark gave his occupation as Cooper and did state he was born in KY, age 28. Araminta was age 20, born in MO. Catharine & Abraham Bird, Mark's parents were living with them. Also listed as being in the same dwelling was Abraham P. Bird, age 32, also a cooper & also born in Kentucky. Presumably Mark's brother. His wife was Elizabeth, age 28, born in Maryland. They had children born in Missouri: Francis R. age 11 [male], Abraham age 8, Susan S. age 4, Catherine age 2.

Story found in tree on Ancestry:
In the Fifties (1850's), a short ways South of the present town of Eureka was the early location of a log school house which was called Dunn's School House. Some years later at a grange meeting held in the school house the need for a post office was brought up and the name of Eureka suggested. The post office was secured and located in the home of P. Anderson [John Peter Anderson (1831-1890)]. Soon a settlement grew up around the Eureka post office. In addition to the teacher who taught in Dunn's School House, Isaac Bird, some other early residents were Ed Drane, M. H. Bird [Mark H. Bird (1822-1882)], Robert Walker, R. B. McCarters [Robert A. Bates McCarter (1812-1875)], James Dunn [David James Dunn (1821-1865)], for whom the shchool was named, the Patton families [including John Rollins Patton (1825-1872)], Jim Jones [James Carolile "Jim" Jones (1814-1878)], Elisha Anderson [Elijah Anderson (1801-1876)], and his son P. Anderson, mentioned above as the first postmatser, the Davidsons and the Montgomerys.
