Samuel McCampbell v. Hugh Paul
On 1 Feb 1786, Samuel made a location of 150 acres of land on the north side of Kerrs Creek in Rockbridge Co adj lands of Alexander McClenaghan, John Gilmore, and John and Samuel Dale by virtue of warrant of 1495 1/4 acres #11396, as assignee of Robert McCampbell who was asee. of William Frame. He had a survey made and has returned it to the proper office, but Hugh Paul made a location in the same place and has obtained a patent for 100 acres. This location was made 18 Mar 1793; a Caveat entered by McCampbell on 24 Jun 1793. By accident the caveat wasn't returned to the office of the County within the time prescribed by law. He claimed it had been mailed to him but miscarried and never reached him. Paul knew all along he had a claim and shouldn't have insisted on a title. Hugh Paul's answer was that when he located the land it had never been surveyed. He figured it was of little importance to McCampbell since it had been unattended for seven years. He stated that Samuel was cutting timber for his saw mill, on land he was not having to pay taxes on, and likely would not have bothered to get a grant, once the timber was gone.
The entries for both men are in the file. McCampbell's was dated 1 Feb 1786 and the details were as above. Hugh Paul entry was made 18 Mar 1793, as assignee of Saml. Houston who was assignee of John Paxton, warrant of 1557 acres, #11101 on the waters of Kerr's Creek bounded by lands of Robt. McCampbell, Joseph Goodbar, John Dale and a tract he had puchased of Alexr. McClenaghan. [changes in the neighbors had occurred in the time between these entries]
The court ordered new surveys and depositions taken of witnesses for either side.

No final disposition is found in the file.
Note: since David Lawson is known to have bought land from John Dale and Samuel Dale married David's sister, Isabella, it is fairly obvious that the families were well acquainted and Samuel McCampbell's daughter Mary would have had an opportunity to meet and marry David's brother Robert Lawson.

The McCampbells were members of New Monmouth Presbyterian Church in Rockbridge. They moved to Shelby Co KY where he died in 1804

To beloved wife Martha, possession of the mansion house, plantation, stock, and profits during her natural life for her use and support of the children.
To son James, the tract where he lives, 250 acres.
Son John, the tract whereon he lives, 200 acres. After his brother Washington comes of age, John is bound to pay him 100£.
Son William, the plantation I formerly lived on lying on Hickory Runn, 200 acres. He is to pay 100£ to his brother Samuel when he comes of age.
To son Andrew, the plantation of 200 acres after the death of his mother.
To daughter Margaret, the young sorrel mare & saddle; when she marries, feather bed and furniture, two cows, and a bureau or desk
To daughter Jane Logan, 50£ - 25 from the home place and 25 from John McCampbell.
To daughter Nancy Elliott, a cow and yearling heifer
