Morris/Maurice Davis

(18 Jul 1769 - 1 Sep 1830)

The information on the Davis family has come from a family file. Posted to WorldConnect by Charles Schesventer, last updated 22 Jan 2003. Information from censuses, Findagrave.com, and other sources, supports this information.

I also found an article on the Maurice (Morris) Davis family in The Heritage of Davidson Co 1982; published by the Genealogical Society of Davidson Co. Article #334 by Mary Jo D. Shoaf, which cites primary sources and estate papers. The following is abstracted from that article.

Maurice was probably the youngest son of Conrad & Sara Davis, b. 18 Jul 1769, d. 1 Sep 1830. He married Mariah Barbara Darr, dau of Johann Heinrich Derr and hiw wife Catherine. Mariah's birth is record in the Pilgrim Church Records as 15 Nov 1782. She died 3 Jul 1854, buried Sandy Creek Lutheran Cemetery, Davidson Co NC. The family was present in Rowan Co prior to the formation of Davidson Co in 1822.

Maurice Davis inherited land in the Jersey Settlement from his father Conrad and brother Andrew, adding other purchases until he had something over 2000 acres. On 15 Nov 1829, he owed debts of over $1700 and lost his home plantation along with the furnishings, slaves, livestock, etc. The family then moved to Tyro. Three days before the death of Maurice, the three youngest children were baptized at the Sandy Creek Meeting House.

In the spring of 1847, Barbara Davis was declared a lunatic, unable to handle her own affairs [probably suffered from senility]. She wrote a will in 1845, designating her brother Andrew Darr, executor, but the court appointed her guardian, Jacob Berrier to administer her affairs. In 1850 Barbara was living with her daughter Mary and Mary's husband Samuel Green.

The Davis children were:
...Mary (Polly) Davis, b. 19 Feb 1808, d. 29 Nov 1890, buried Sandy Creek Cemetery. She married (1) Joseph Owen and (2) Samuel Green.
...Sophia Davis, b. 11 Feb 1811, d. 15 aug 1881, buried Sandy Creek Cemetery. Married Adam Swicegood.
...Evan Davis, b. 1815, married the widow Elizabeth Haden 5 Mar 1839, Samuel Green was bondsman. Elizabeth had two children, Elizabeth Ruth, b. 1835 who later married Evan's younger brother Augustus, and James Haden, b. 1838. Evan Davis & Elizabeth Haden had one son, John, b. 1839. In the Fall Term, 1846, Equity Court of Davidson Co, James Haden sued Evan Davis & Jno Callaway. David ordered removed as guardian and the court was to collect funds to which James Haden was entitled. James Haden was not of age so the payments were to be made to his guardian appointed by the Forsyth Co Court. In the Fall Term, 1849, James Haden again sued Evan Davis and others. The court ordered $25 be paid towards expense of Ruth Haden for tuition, board, etc. Family tradition states that John Davis, son of Evan & Elizabeth moved to Virginia and Evan also later moved to Virginia where he died from injuries when he was kicked by a mule.
...Henry Davis. b. 12 Jan 1817; d. 17 Feb 1877.
...Caroline Davis, b. 27 Jun 1818, Pilgrim Church Records. Died 24 Dec 1892, buried Jerusalem Cemetery, Davie Co, NC Caroline married Billy Douglas Haden, 12 Dec 1838. They had one daughter, C. A. Haden, b. 21 Mary 1841, d. 18 Jul 1865 - buried with her mother at Jerusalem Cemetery. Billie D. Haden had been married previously and had at least two children - a daughter Mary who married John Campbell, 25 Sep 1823, Rowan Co; and a son William S. Haden who died 5 Sep 1839, Bastrap Co, TX at age 24. Caroline married 2nd to Thomas J. Deadman, 1 Jun 1848, Davie Co. Her brother Augustus Davis was the bondsman; witness was Lemuel Bingham. Thomas J. Deadman was b. 17 May 1811, d. 13 Mar 1893 and is buried Deadman Cemetery
...Ceasar Augustus Davis [also seen as Augustus E. and Gus] was born 3 Jul 1821, baptized at Sandy Creek Meeting House, 29 Aug 1830. They had children Elizabeth b. 1850 who married Henry Foster; John A. b. 1853 who went to Globe, Arizona & then Miami, Florida; Mary Ella b. 18 Nov 1855, d. 23 Jun 1823 who married James Henry Walser; Hubbard, b. 1859, who married Mary Alice Clement and is buried Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Salisbury; and Jennie who may have married a McCorkle.
...Morris Osborne (Ause) Davis was b. 24 Feb 1824. In 1847 he married Elizabeth Grubb. Both are buried Liberty Methodist church Cemetery, Davie Co. He was a soldier in the Mexican War 1846-1848 and saw service on the front lines. In 1857, Osborne and his brother-in-law Hiram Grubb moved to Missouri, but after two years, Osborne & Elizabeth came back to davie Co. Morris Osborne Davis died 27 Apr 1901 and is buried at Liberty Methodist Cemetery.
