John is said to have married Mary Kent, 4 Feb 1774.

There is a pension application that I believe is for this John Poor, File 38314.
He applied 27 Jan 1823 at age 72 and was residing in Nelson Co VA. He was drafted as a private into the Continental Army on 20 Mar 1781, in Albemarle Co. He fought at Yorktown and was discharged at Cumberland Courthouse. John had been a school master but advanced age and loss of hearing & sight, rendered him unable to pursue this occupation. His wife was also aged and very infirm, and also age 72.
The application file gives conflicting dates for several events. Elizabeth T. Hackett, age 61, living in Buckingham Co presented a Power of Attorney stating that she was a daughter of John and Mary Poor who had married 4 Feb 1744. John had died 5 Mar 1834; her mother had died 15 Nov 1840. The date of the PofA appears to be 25 May 1855. A letter later sent to a descendant quoted Elizabeth's name as Haskett and her age as 81 - that was incorrect. Included in the file is a deposition dated 4 Sep 1847, by Col. John M. Harris who states he had been well acquainted with John Poor, having gone to school under him, and he was very sure and entry made in the family Register concerning the marriage of John and Mary Poor was in John's handwriting. He believed John Poor had been a Revolutionary soldier and a pensioner; they had lived in Buckingham Co; Mary Poor the widow had survived her husband. Another statement on the same day from Eliza Hackett [no age given] states that John Poor was her grandfather and a pensioner of the United States. She said he died 2 Mar 1834 and Mary had died on 10 Nov 1833 - these dates do not agree with those of Elizabeth T. Hackett in the Power of Attorney in 1855.
