Thomas Poor

(20 Mar 1755 - 18 Sep 1837)

Thomas was the first child of Abraham & Judith to be recorded as baptized at St. James Northam - the other children, John, Mary & Mildred were likely born before the Rev. Douglas came to Goochland and started recording the Parish records. The Douglas Register states he was born Mar. 10; baptized 19 April 1756. This has been interpreted by most that he was also born in 1756, but in his Revolutionary pension, he gave the year as 1755.

Thomas was a Revolutionary soldier, serving as a Sergeant under Capts. Wilson & Morris, and Col. Ball, in the Viginia militia. He married Frances Matthews and lived in Cumberland Co. [DAR index online.]

He had served at various times from Aug 1777 when he was drafted into the militia of Cumberland Co, until the Spring of 1781; he served as a private and as a sergeant. He did receive his pension at the rate of $85 per year based on his service as a sergeant.
