Henry Gatewood

( - )

Henry may have had another marriage to Tabitha Collins but apparently all the children were Dorothy's. Children suggested other than Keziah and Larkin are Dudley, Henry William Peter, Dorothy, and Richard who also migrated to Elbert Co GA with Larkin.

Henry's father was John Gatewood whose will was dated 14 Nov 1706, Essex Co VA. It was probated 10 Jan 1707; WB 1, p.328.
John Gatewood of South Farnham Parish, Ellex County, planter, gave to his eldest son John Gatewood, 100 acres he bought of Edwin Thacker on John Cheeks' line. To his eldest daughter Frances Shackelford, one shilling. To son Richard, the plantation the testator was then living upon. To son Thomas, 150 acres, part of land bought of Capt. Richard Haile, deceased; also part of the 5000 acres which formerly belonged to Col. Thomas Goodrick, Mr. Henry Aubrey and Maj. George Mirrocall, all deceased. To son Henry Gatewood, 75 acres, begin at a tree standing against Simon Copner's house who is now deceased and running to Joseph Billender's land; a cow and calf. To daughter Amie Burnett, 4000 pounds of tobacco and a bay mare. The remaining estate to be divided between his three younger children, Sarah, William and Frances Gatewood and beloved wife. Wife Amie and son Richard to be executors.
Wit: Joseph Baker, Thomas Wheeler.

VA PB 7, p.625 James Taylor of New Kent received a patent for 744 acres, Rappahannock Co, South side of Rappahannock River, 21 Oct 1687. 480 acres granted to Henry Abery, who sold to Robert Bishopp, who bequeathed to John Gregory, who gave it to his sister Mary, now wife of sd James Taylor. Land in danger of being lost was petitioned for by Taylor the 1st day of the last General Court, 15 Apr 1687 and granted. Beg. Indian Path alias Mr. Abery's path to fork of Gregory's Cr; on Richard Gregory's line, in sight of John Gatewood's plantation to the Rowling Road. Also 246 acres for transport of 5 persons [which included James Taylor himself] Cavaliers, Vol II, p.317

An online database gave two references to land of John Gatewood that I have not been able to locate online, possibly he was named in grants of others.

John did purchase 100 acres, South Farnham Parish, Rappahannock Co from John Gregory for 1840 #'s of tobacco. Deed signed 9 Dec 1676, recorded 26 Jun 1677. This area became Essex Co. John served on a jury when the Essex Co Court convened, 11 Feb 1692/3.

2 Feb 1708/9, two years after the death of John Gatewood, Amy Gatewood bought 250 acres of land adjacent to hers which Francis Meriwether had acquired from William Stone in 1699. Joseph Baker married Amy prior to 9 May 1710, when the Meriwether tract was sold by them to William Compton.
Joseph Baker's will was 20 Sep 1720. Among the bequests was a new suit of clothes for Henry Gatewood. His stepchildren all received various bequests as did his sisters still in London. Amy along with her son John Gatewood, were named executors.

A Thomas Magrah, planter, of Essex Co, signed a will 21 Nov 1722 in which he made generous bequests to James, John & Phillip Gatewood. Witnesses included David Scott and Amy Baker whose mark was a capital "M" as on other documents. This has been taken to indicate Amy and Thomas Magrah were perhaps related.

Amy Baker signed a will 4 Apr 1744. She made several bequests to children and grandchildren but specified the remainder was to be divided equally between seven children - John Gatewood, Thomas Gatewood, Henry Gatewood, James Gatewood Frances Arnold, Amy Scott, and Sarah Ferguson. She gave a ring to Catherine Gatewood, widow of son William. Sons Thomas and James were appointed executors. Rec. 18 Jun 1745.
Of the children named in John Gatewood's will, Amy did not mention Richard, nor did she state that any of the Gatewood grandchildren were his - however one of the grandsons, Benjamin Gatewood, was bequeathed "the tract of land that I now live on". Since Richard was to receive the home plantation, perhaps he was deceased.
