Agnes "Nancy" Lawson

( - )

There is a marriage for Nancy Lawson and Samuel Miller on 23 Jun 1808 in Rockbridge. Said to be a daughter of Isaac. The minister was William Baldridge, Assoc. Reform. In Isaac Lawson's will he named a daughter as Agnes Miller and had no daughter as Nancy. However, there are deeds in which Isaac's wife is called Nancy and she is also Agnes in his will. Nancy was used sometimes as a nickname for Agnes. Some say Agnes & Samuel left for Kentucky soon after their marriage but I have no further proof of that.

A letter in an old research file, from George Diehl, archivist of Rockbridge Co, gives the same date for the above marriage but names the bride as Agnes Lawson - one doesn't know if he made a leap of faith or saw the name actually recorded as Agnes. They were married by the Rev. Wm. Baldridge.

There is a Samuel Miller who left a will in Rockbridge dated 12 Nov 1813 - it's likely he's the father of the Samuel who married Nancy. The will was probated on 2 Sep 1816 and names his wife as Elizabeth, also a son Samuel and daughter Susanna. Other children had received their portion and were not named in this abstract.

A Virginia land grant, GB 60, p.40-41, to Samuel Miller of Rockbridge was Treasury warrant 4240, issued 29 July 1805. 300 acres, surveyed 21 Apr 1807. On the head waters of Kerr's Creek adj the lands of Hnery Hostetter, Robert Lawson, James Lawson and Henry Banks. Grant dated 12 Sep 1809.

In 1810 there was a Saml. Miller living next door to Joshua Hicks in Rockbridge. He was over age 45 and had a male age 16-26 and one 26-45 living with him as well as two females, one 16-26 and one 26-45.
There was a second Saml. Miller several pages away but he also seemed to be over age 45 and had quite a large household with a slightly younger wife and about ten children, some as old as 16-26 and four little boys under age 10.
Neither of these seem likely to be Samuel & Nancy unless Samuel & Nancy were the younger couple in the household of the Saml who lived near Joshua Hicks - that could be possible.
