Abraham Bird

(1756 - 23 Dec 1820)

In 1798, Abraham received a Spanish grant in Missouri opposite the mouth of the Ohio River. He had a plantation on his grant by 1803 and lived there until the flood of 1814-15, when he resettled in Baton Rouge Parish, leaving his Missouri & Illinois land holdings to his sons. Much of the land was damaged during the New Madrid earthquakes. An Act of Congress, 17 Feb 1815, offered some relief to owners of land damaged in New Madrid County as a result of the earthquakes and owners could exchanged their tracts. On 16 Feb 1816, Abraham gave power of attorney to his son Thompson, then living at Cape Girardeau to get certificates for new land which was to be along the river in what is now Marion Co.

Abraham died 23 Dec 1820, leaving five children and the widow. [His wife was Mary Jones.] The power of attorney to son Thompson was voided and the patent was not issued until 1824.

Abraham's first cousin, Capt Abraham Bird who married Catherine Fry, must surely have known about this land where the Birds were to settle in northeast Missouri. This may have been one of the catalysts for the migration of some of the Fry families from Kentucky as well.
