Stephen S. Murrell

(1796 - 1867)

I have seen this man's name as Samuel S. Murrell - the 1860 census is of no help and his will is written as Stephen S. Murrell. His full name was perhaps Stephen Samuel.

This entry could be Stephen in 1850:
Tippah Co, MS, Hh 1314
S. S. Murrell, age 54, b. VA, farmer
Margaret Murrell, 59, b. VA
Mella Hote, 25, b. AL
John Smart 14, b. MS
Edward Hunt 53, Miller, b. VA
The slave schedule reveals he owned two slaves, a 55 year old female, and a 30 year old mulatto male.

1860 Census, Franklin Co TN, District 2, p.50
Zacariah Murrell, age 65, b. VA. Adeline, age 55, b. VA
Zack R. 16, Susan age 20
S. S. Murrell, age 64, b. VA [male - apparently his brother]

Note: The four who are to divide the remainder of the estate would seem to be the four children of Zachariah Haden Murrell, Stephen's brother. Living with the nephew William Murrell in 1860 was a Sarah Hurty or Hurtz - she owned slaves as did William. I suspect this is another daughter of Zachariah Haden Murrell's!
