Henry FOX II

(1674 - )

Most databases give the parents of Richard Fox who married Hannah Williamson, as Henry Fox II and his (2) wife Mary Claiborne. And later Henry seems to be in Brunswick Co, as was Richard. However, recent DNA studies indicate there was likely no kinship.

He is seen as having been married twice - to Mary Claiborne and to Mary Kendrick. They are seen both as the first wife and the second wife. The children are attributed rather indiscriminately to these ladies. The names of the children differ considerably as well.

I also suspect the dates of his birth as well as the dates of the above marriages are guesses and not based on any particular fact.

The following could be either Henry Fox I or this Henry Fox II.

King & Queen Co 1701/2. William Leigh, Col., Henry Fox, Maj. John Fox, Lt.

King William was formed from King & Queen County in 1702 and this land was apparently part of the new county. Both these counties have a major loss of records from this time period.

Virginia Quit Rents, 1704. Henry Fox. 2000 acres, King William Co.
Capt John Fox, 600 acres, King William Co.
Margaret Fox, King & Queen Co, tax due, 100 acres.

Henry Fox I was deceased about 1714, so these records are definitely those of the younger Henry:
CAVALIERS, Vol 3, p.356 Henry Fox of King Wm Co. 1000 acres of New Land in Spotsyl. Co. in St. George's Par. N side Northanna Riv. 28 Sep 1728, PB13, p.279
p.368. Richard Phillips of Hanover, 1000 acres new land Spotsylvania Co, St. George's Parish, N side of Northanna Riv, corner of Jas/Jos Woolfolk, on Henry Fox's line on E side of Beaverdam Run. 18 Sep 1728. PB 13, p.453

I don't believe that Henry ever moved to this 1000 acres in Spotsylvania because he sold it less than two years later. SPOTSYLVANIA COUNTY RECORDS 1721-1800, by William Armstrong Crozier, has the following deed from DB B. 14 Jul 1730 Henry Fox of King William County to Samuel Henderson of Hanover for 16£ sterling, 1000 acres in Spotsylvania Co. Wit: Wm Jones, John Malory, Nightingall Dalby. Rec. 6 Oct 1730.

By 1734, a Henry Fox was in Brunswick Co. and was a court Justice, or Burgess.

The only other records of the surname Fox in Brunswick Co at this time have to do with one William Fox who had a close association with the Weaver & Peterson families. He lived on the N side Fountains Creek. There was nothing to suggest he was or was not related to Henry and Richard Fox. An Index to the Brunswick Co Court Orders 1737-1749 shows several entries for all three - Henry, Richard & William Fox.
