Henry Fox I

(Abt 1650 - 1714)

Henry Fox is believed to be the son of John Fox, born 1624 in Buckinghamshire, England; died bef 1683 in Gloucester Co VA. Mother's name unknown. There is a marriage record in Stepney Parish England on 2 Apr 1661 for John Fox to Margaret Thomas but this would be some years after the birth of Henry, even if it should be the same John Fox.

VA Land Patent. PB 7, p.245 Mr. Henry Fox SON AND HEIR of Mr. John Fox. 300 acres in New Kent and Gloucester Counties. Corner of Mr. Wm Anderson, nigh John Lewis' Quarter, the Swamp, land of Mr. Wm Lynes. 200 acres purchased by Mr. John Fox of Mr. Thomas Hanks, granted to Hanks & Jno Garrott. Residue granted for transportation of two persons. 16 Apr 1683. [A patent dated 10 Dec 1668 in New Kent Co to William Anderson, was on the north side of Capt. John Fox's plantation. Mr. Anderson had purchased part of his land from Tho. Hanks. This would seem to leave no doubt that Henry was a son of John Fox of New Kent/Gloucester. Another patent of William Anderson dated 22 Sep 1682 mentions land adjacent to Mr. Wm Lines. A patent to Mr. John Lewis dated 16 Aug 1667 mentions both the Poropotanke Swamp and land of John Fox.]

16 Oct 1704 Petition of Henry Fox in behalf of himself, Col. John West, Capt Thomas West, & Capt Nathaniel West for land in King William Co is rejected, leave not being given to take up land there. Copy of the petition states that Col. John West, late of King & Queen County, dec'd did in his lifetime devise by deed of gift and by his last Will & Testament to the petitioners, a tract of 4000 acres in King & Queen Co [now King William] which he did occupy & enjoy for several years and we have since peaceably and quietly enjoyed the same, having build several considerable buildings thereon. Having daily troubles concerning the titles of land, they have made a diliget search having always been informed that there was a patent for the same dated 1654 which we cannot find.
This petition was presented at a later date [date not stated, only refers to Petition of 1704] as Henry Fox in behalf of his Two Sons John & Thomas & Nath'l West for himself. This petition also states "now that Liberty is Granted to take up lands in King William Co".
