William Echols

William married first Rebecca [or Rachel] Spradlin, and second, Susannah Sneed Spradlin, by 1 April 1785 when she relinquished her dower right in 510 acres William sold to John Borum.
William provided beef, corn, oats, and bacon to the Army during the Revolution, for which he was later reimbursed.
William was head of a household of 13 whites and one black in Halifax County in 1782. Nine whites were in his family in 1785. William Peters Martin deeded about 200 acres on both sides of Birch Creek to Echols 19 October 1785, while retaining the privilege of having his corn ground toll-free.
William made his will in Halifax County naming wife, Susanna, and sons, Larkin, William, Moses, John, Elkanah, Joel Echols. His daughters were Betty Echols, Sarah Brown, Ruth Brown, and Judith Evans (will dated 7 Nov. 1788, recorded 22 Sept. 1794). Susanna Elizabeth Echols married third William Allen in Halifax County 3 October 1795.

William and Susanna's children:
4› Elkanah Echols [838.3.3.5] married Elizabeth Anderson in Amelia County 20 August (bond) 1783. Elkanah and Elizabeth gave a power of attorney to Samuel Pannill to collect from the administrators of Paulin and Richard Anderson, 27 September 1797. They moved to Tennessee and settled on the Cumberland River.

I, William Echols of Halifax Co., sick and weak of body but of perfect mind To my wife Susannah Echols - my land and plantation on great Pole Catt Cr, together with half the profits of my mill on Burches Cr, during her nateral life or widowhood. To my son Larkin Echols - 50 acres on the upper end of the tract I now live on, or 50 pounds in gold or silver, to be paid to him by my son, William, when Larkin arrives at age 21 years. To my son William Echols - the land and plantation whereon I now live. To my son Larkin Echols - 50 acres on the lower end, on both sides of great Poll Catt Cr, or 50 pounds in gold or silver, to be paid to him by my 2 sons, Moses and John Echols, when Larkin arrives at age 21 years. To my son Moses Echols - all my land on the north or lower side of great Poll Catt Cr, and 20 acres on the south side, at the upper end of my land. To my friend John Anderson - 19 acres already surveyed. To my son John Echols - all the remainder of my land on the south side of the Cr. To my daughter Betty Echols - 1 good horse and side saddle, 2 good cows and calves, 2 good ewes and lambs, 5 hogs, 1 good feather bed and good furniture, 1 pewter dish, 6 pewter plates, 1 pewter basin, 1 iron pot and kettle. To my daughter Sarah Brown - 1 large copper kettle. To my son Elkanah Echols - 5 shillings. To my son Joel Echols - 5 shillings. To my daughter Ruth Brown - 5 shillings. To my daughter Judith Evans - 5 shillings. To my son Larkin Echols - all the remainder of my estate. If any of my 5 last children that I had by my last wife, should die before they arrive at lawful age or without issue, their part should be equally divided among my surviving children by my last wife.
