Maj. Richard Johnson

( - Jan 1733)

Richard Johnston married Oriana Attwood on 20 Sep 1716 at St. Michael's Parish in Bristol, Gloucester, England. He apparently traveled back and forth to England as his father had done.

Oriana Duddlestone, was christened 19 May 1672 at All Saints in Bristol. Her parents were John and Susanna Duddlestone. This Oriana undoubtedly became the wife of William Attwood and the mother of the Oriana Attwood, who married Richard Johnson in 1716. John Duddlestone became a Baronet on 11 Jan 1691/92, almost 20 years after this christening.

Richard was a resident of Stratton Major Parish in King & Queen Co until about 1733. He was a Vestryman and processioner. In 1729, he was promoted from Captain to Major in the Militia. "Pleasant Hill" was his plantation - the land purchased by Col. Richard Johnson and passed on to his son Richard in 1698. Richard Johnson devised the land to his nephew Richard - his will dated 12 Dec 1733.

Richard and Oriana are buried with Col. Richard in the Old Church Cemetery:

Pleasant Hill
The large tract of land lying on the Mattapony River which is known to this day as Pleasant Hill was probably included in an early patent to Story. It is evident that Col. Richard Johnson, who was in King and Queen in 1680 and died in 1698 while a member of the Council of State, purchased the land. It passed to his son Richard Johnson after 1698, and in his will made on Dec 12, 1733, he devised to his nephew Richard Johnson, 1000 acres of land on the mattapony River in King and Queen County, Stratton Major Parish. [Nephew] Richard Johnson sold this tract of land to John Robinson in 1744 and this became the nucleus of the immense tract of land which John Robinson had title to at the time of his death. John Robinson died May 11, 1766.

When Richard Johnson died, he left land to two of his nephews - sons of Thomas Johnson.

The letters of Richard Chapman, who married Jane Johnson, daughter of Thomas, and granddaughter of Col. Richard, imply that both Thomas & William Johnson had died prior to the death of Maj. Richard Johnson.
