Oriana Attwood

( - 30 Apr 1742)

Will of William Atwood, Bristol [England], Merchant, dated 6 Sep 1729.
The will discusses deeds of Lease & Release from himself to Sir John Duddlestone, Barronet, Thomas Clement Esqr, John Becher Esqr, and Jeremiah Devorill all of Bristoll [Sir John was his father-in-law, the other three were brothers-in-law, married to his wife's sisters].
William lists son William and daughters Susanna and Margaret to receive the sale of the above property.
Ten children are to receive equally: sons, Edward, John, Arthur & George as well as William, and daughters, Susanna, Margaret and also Ann, Jane and Henrietta
Provisions were made to pay daughter Oriana, wife of Richard Johnson, 50 pounds.
A sister, Eleanor Gibbs was the recipient of 5 pounds.
Jeremiah Devorill, William Atwood the younger, Susanna & Margaret Atwood to be Executors.

Oriana's mother was also named Oriana - the daughter of Sir John Duddlestone.
Duddlestone's will was dated 31 Dec 1715; he was also from Bristol. He made bequests to his wife, the Lady Susanna, his daughter Elizabeth, wife of Thomas Clements of Bristol, daughter Oriana, wife of William Attwood of Bristol. He also named sons in law John Beecher of Bristol and Jeremiah Deverell of Chyrugeon. [Duddlestone did indeed use the term son-in-law with the same meaning we use today]. There was a grandson, John Duddleston, son of a deceased don Ebenezer; and another grandson named John Duddlestone, a posthumous son of John Duddlestone, merchant, deceased. Jeremiah Deverell had a son John and daughter Susanna - perhaps his wife a daughter of Sir John, was deceased. Appointed executors were wife Lady Susanna, Jeremiah Deverel, Edward Parsons & John Elbridge [Parsons and Elbridge had been designated as friends earlier in the will]

Oriana's tombstone indicates she married again after the death of Richard Johnson to a Thorpe or Thornton.
