Jacob Biffle applied for his Revolutionary pension in Maury Co TN, on 20 Dec 1832. Claim S3003. He was aged about 70, stating he was born Rowan Co, NC in 1763. He remembered his age because he knew he was 18 when Cornwallis surrendered. When he was a boy, his father moved the family to Sulivan Co on the Holston River, East Tennessee, which was then still part of North Carolina. He went into service from there. After the war, he moved to what was then Burk Co NC for a few years, then moved further to what is now Haywood Co NC. In 1810, he moved to Maury Co TN where he has been ever since. He had three tours of duty - his militia unit was called up each time.
His first tour was in 1779 or 1780, under Col. Shelby and Genl. Campbell, near the Watauga River, and they were marched over the yellow mountain to King's Mountain when Ferguson was defeated and killed. Then they marched toward Moravian Town. They were discharged at the Yadkin River. The year that Cornwallis was taken, he was called out again under Col. Shelby and marched into South Carolina, near Charleston where they took a hospital and prisoners. They returned to the Santee River and were dismissed & returned home in small parties. They had a skirmish with the Indians returning home over the yellow mountain. In March after that, he thinks, the Indians harassed the frontier and he was called out a third time under Shelby at the Holston River. There was a deep snow' only volunteers continued on the campaign, and Biffle volunteered. They were engaged all along the frontier. All three tours were for three months. He never received a discharge that he recalled.
Biffle was allowed a pension for his service.
Jacob Biffle died 16 Feb 1844, survived by a widow.
