Elizabeth Hicks

(Abt 1781 - )

Information found online at the USGenWeb Rockbridge Co site indicates that Nicholas Spring Jr, born about 1774, married Elizabeth Hicks, daughter of Joshua Hicks, 25 Aug 1796, Augusta Co VA. She died before 1820 when he married Lucy Franklin 20 Dec 1820, Washington Co TN.

Rockbridge was formed from Augusta Co as early as 1778, so I believe that the Hicks were not actually in Rockbridge until sometime between the marriage of Elizabeth in 1796 and the marriage of her sister Margaret in Rockbridge Co in 1790.

1810 Census, Rockbridge Co VA:
Nicholas Spring was found about five doors away from Robert Lawson who married his wife's sister Margaret. There were two males age 26-45 [Nicholas about age 36] and one age 16-26 and only a single female age 16-26.

Although both the 1810 Rockbridge Census and transcripts of the Augusta Co records done by Chalkley in Chronicles of the Scotch Irish Settlement in Virginia show Nicholas' surname as "Spring". I believe that it was actually Pring. Descendants of this family spell it as Pring and there was also a Richard Pring living in Rockbridge. If one says "Nicholas Pring" outloud it is impossible to tell where the "s" belongs.

Elizabeth's Nicholas is believed to have been the son of a man of the same name - a Nicholas Pring born circa 1750 whose wife was Nancy. He is found in the personal property tax records of Augusta Co VA, 1787. Road crew lists indicate he lived on Christian's Creek. Children are said to be four sons:
Edward Pring, born abt 1770 and died before 1832 in Rockbridge Co VA. This Nicholas, born ca 1774. He married (1) Elizabeth Hicks and (2) Lucy Franklin on 20 Dec 1820, Washington Co TN. The younger Nicholas died 29 Apr 1859.
Richard Pring, born ca 1775, died ca 1835, Rockbridge Co VA.
James M. Pring, born ca 1780 who married Ingle Teany, 1 Oct 1818, Washington Co TN.
There was also a daughter as listed in the Augusta Co Marriage records:
2 Jan 1786, Augustine Kaiger and Catherine Spring, daughter of Nicholas Spring. Surety, Saml. Merrit. Nicholas and his daughter Catherine both received bequests in the will of Valentine Cloninger, 18 Sep 1783 - tracts of land purchased of Robt Beverley.
The Augusta Co records reveal that in 1799, Nicholas Spring Sr was listed as Delinquent - removed to Tennessee.
