BACKGROUND: The Indiana Legion was the state militia that was created during the Civil War to protect Indiana's borders. Membership was open to every able-bodied male in the state who was not already serving in the military. Indiana Legion units - consisting of about 100 men - were formed in every township of every county. The members chose the name of their unit, which was often fanciful. These units were supposed to do military training each month and be available to be called up in an emergency, but many units were undertrained & underequipped, or existed only on paper.
