Nathaniel Waddill

( - 1 Oct 1835)

Cabell states that Nathaniel Waddill lived in Charles City County in 1794, when he was a tutor for young William Allen Christian, son of Gideon Christian.

He apparently settled in Nottoway Co where he was placed on the Pensions Rolls of Virginia, 14 Feb 1829. He was listed as serving as a dragoon in the Virginia Cavalry. He received $100 annually. His pension file states that he died 1 Oct 1835. He served for 2 1/2 years as a trooper under Capt James Jones; when Jones died, the 1st Lt. Cassmore Madison, was promoted and he served under Madison until the end of the War. He signed his own name to the application 23, Sep 1828. He did not give his age in the application.

I was not able to find him in 1820 or 1830.

There is a scant mention of a Nathaniel Waddill in Pittsylvania Co VA. The Noel Waddill of Pittsylvania had no known son named Nathaniel so this person as a witness has been a puzzle. It is also notable that Noel Waddill was still of Halifax Co at the time of this land purchase:
This is the first record of Waddills in that county: Deed Book 6, p.p.438 30 Dec 1784 Thomas Wynne to Noel Waddill of Halifax Co. 350#'s. Tract in Pittsy both sides of Sandy Creek of Dan River. 606 acres. Corner James Scales line, to Hammonds, Robert Williams's line, James Wood? Wit: Solomon (X) Seale, Jas. Seale, Nathl Waddill, Noel Waddill Junr, George Hardey

In 1800, Nathaniel Waddill is found on a list of qualified voters, Halifax Co VA.

I also found a Nathaniel Waddell living in Halifax Co VA in both 1820 and 1830. In 1820 he was listed as being over age 45 and had a spouse of the same age. In 1830, he was age 40-50, living alone. [if this is the same man he should have been at least ten years older].
