Cousins Seek A Separation
Find Marriage is Illegal Under the Statutes of Indiana
After having been married for eight years, Ulysses Learner and his wife, Mattie Learner, have discovered that because they are first cousins their marriage is illegal. In the Howard supreme court, the husband filed a complaint asking that the married be annulled. Mr. and Mrs. Learner, though loving each other as well as on the day when they stood before the altar, have separated. They are country people, and eight years ago, when they were married, they did not know that they were violating the law. To them has been born one child, and it is for his sake that they have asked the court to give them a legal separation. The proceeding is most unusual, the case being the first of its kind ever filed in Howard county.
The article also appeared in the Logansport Reporter, Logansport, IN, on 12 May 1903, the Galveston Leader, Galveston, IN and the Hartford City Telegram, Hardford City, IN, on 13 May 1903, and in the Menton Tri County Gazette, Menton, IN, and the Ligonier Leader, Ligoneir, IN on 14 May 1903.
