Capt William Chamberlain

(25 Jan 1744/45 - 27 Nov 1810)

William and Rebecca were twins.

William Chamberlain is found on the tax rolls of the Town of Amenia, Dutchess Co, NY, as early as 1767 - his brother John and father Joseph were there two years earlier, but William was not yet of age.

William married Abagail Hatch 27 Mar 1767, South Amenia Presbyterian Church, Amenia, Dutchess Co NY. She was the daughter of Barnabas and Phebe Hatch, and was born 9 Nov 1742 in Kent, Litchfield County, CT. She is said to have had two ancestors on the Mayflower. Abigail died in 1812.

The births of their children said to be from a Bible record. They were born in Amenia. Isaac, b. 1768, died 1783. Sybil, b. 1770 married Solomon Freeman. William, b. 1771 married Lucy Park. James, b. 1773 married Hannah. Phebe, b. 1775 married Roswell Bump. Abigail, born 1778 married Gilbert Boyd. Ephraim, bon 1781, died in 1807. Rebecca, b. 1783 married Archibald M. Allerton. Oliver E., born 1785, married Helena Rowe.

He is listed in New York in the Revolution as Colony & State and was Captain of a group of enlistees mainly from Pawling, Beekman & Southeast; Third [Field's] Regiment, Dutchess County Militia. He is said to have been present at the Battle of Saratoga. The Amenia Historical Society website says that his brothers, Colby, James & John also served.

William & Abagail are buried in the Amenia Union Cemetery, one of the oldest in the town. It is west of the site of a Presbyterian Church, known as "Round Top Meeting House", built about 1755 and torn down in 1786. It is likely the church where they were married.
