Simeon "Sim" Pippin

(2 Nov 1832 - 5 Feb 1915)

Listed as age 9 in the 1850 Census, born 1841, but this is the census that has all the ages wrong - it should have been 17. Even his death certificate gives his date of birth as 2 Nov 1832. All other censuses are consistent with the earlier birth.

1860 Census, District 10, Jackson Co TN.
Simeon Pipin, age 26, b. TN.
Living with him was Walter Pain, age 60.

Simeon enlisted in Company B, 28th TN Infantry, Confederate on 23 Dec 1862 for three years, at Murfreesboro, and served as orderly sergeant. He is described as having dark complexion, brown hair, blue eyes, 5'10" tall. This regiments was merged with the 84th TN and designated the Consolidated TN Infantry; Simeon served as a 1st Sergeant, Company K.

Testified several times for his brother Andrew's pension. Stated he was with him when he was injured and accompanied him towards home but they were captured and taken to Nashville Prison where both eventually signed the Oath in order to get home. He believed Andrew would have died if he had not signed the Oath and gone home.

Simeon Pippin's death certificate lists the proper dates of birth and death. He died of Uremic Poisoning, contributory was enlargement of the prostate. E. W. Maberry or Mabry, the doctor, gave the information for the death certificate. Strangely Sim's father was listed as Kinch Pippin - Kinch was his brother; their father was Henry. His mother given as Eliza Bohanon - Sim's sister Mary Margaret had married a Bohannan & they had a daughter Eliza, but she married a Buckner. None of the Kinchen/Kinch Pippins was married to an Eliza at all. Sim's mother was Elizabeth Lawson. He was age 82 at the time of death.

The death certificate has caused a great deal of confusion. However, there is no doubt of his parentage. His son, Morgan, instituted a lawsuit to settle the estate of his grandfather, Henry Pippin and the following in in the report in 1918: "SIMEON PIPPIN child of Henry and Eliza is dead and leaves as his only child and heir the complainant Morgan Pippin who is entitled to 1/7 interest". I believe Morgan, who was living on his grandfather's land, was attempting to get clear title.

Buried Morgan Pippin Cemetery, Jackson County, Tennessee on 6 Feb 1915. The inscription on his stone reads, " Farewell dear Father, sweet thy rest. Weary with years and worn...
