Individual Details

FRANCES "Fanny" Thompson

(Ca 1769 - Feb 1860)

Obviously there was a mistake in the Pedigree chart which showed her as born 1783 - she surely did not marry at age 10. other sources give a date of 1769 which seems more reasonable.

In 1802, her husband John Huff deeded property to his four daughters by Frances, making James Thompson, their grandfather, trustee. He did not mention Frances. Apparently he left her at that time for Elizabeth Pratt.

1820 Census. Blacksburg, Montgomery Co VA [census is alpha]
Fanny Huff, 1m 10-16; 2f under 10 [??? should have been older]; 1f 16-26, 1f over 45.
The male child is believed to be Mathew B. Huff - some believe he is a son of Fanny & John Huff but Y-DNA tests on a claimed descendant would indicate this is not the case. He could be a child of her daughter Sarah.
There was also a male Francis Huff in that place in 1820.

1830 Census. I didn't find Frances. The male Francis Huff was still present and someone has suggested this is "Frances" - I don't think so - an adult male is present and there is no female in the household of the age of Frances. This census is also alpha.
Mathew was found in Montgomery Co, Blacksburg.
Perhaps Frances was with one of her daughters.

Fanny is said to be on tax records of Patrick Co Va from 1826-1830. Nancy and Sally Huff are said to also be there, with the name Huff, although both would have been married.

1833 - son Mathew said to have bought 100 acres on Burk's Fork from Moses Brown, Grayson Co VA.

1840 Census: It seems that Frances is living with Mathew, Grayson Co VA:
Mathew Huff: 1m under 5, 1m 5-10, 1m 30-40. 1f under 5, 1f 10-15, 1f 30-40, 1f age 60-70

Interestingly there is an unidentified Huff female in Floyd Co VA. Would be interesting to identify her: Margaret Huff had 1m age 15-20, 1f age 10-15, 2f age 15-20, 1f 20-30 and herself, age 50-60. It is true that several of these related families were found in Grayson Co in 1830 and then in Floyd in 1840 - among those was Fanny's daughter Nancy, married to Edmund Branscomb. In Grayson in 1830 was a Peter Huff with 2m under 5, 2m 5-10, 1m 30-40. 1f under 5, 1f 5-10, 1f 20-30 - this isn't a good match at all to Margaret.

1842 Tax List - Carroll Co VA - Fanny Huff, Mathew Huff, James Thompson

1850 Census. Carroll Co VA, Hh 431
Sarah Maybry, age 23, b. VA [married daughter of Mathew?]
Susan S., age 1, b. VA
Francis Huff, female, age 81 [birth year of about 1769], b. VA

Francis "Hoff" is in the Mortality Census for 1860, Floyd Co, Virginia.
She was age 89, born in Virginia, died in February, of old age.
