Churchwell married 11 Apr 1850 to Catherine Ellen Phillip, daughter of Richard Phillip. He married 2nd about 1888 to Elizabeth "Bettie" Hurst.

1850 Census. Carroll Co, Household 340. Churchwell Maybry, age 20, Farmer. Wife Catherine age 17.

In 1860, Churchwell lived next door to his parents. He was a Blacksmith. Catherine was 28. Children were Sarah 8, Jane 6, James T. 4, and Mary A. 2.

1880 Census, Laurel Fork Dist. Churchwell Mabry, age 51, Catharine his wife age 47. Children: William A. 19, Christopher C. 16, Cora Ann 14, Laura V. 12, Amos F. 8, and Nancy C. 5.
James T. was two households away, age 24. Wife Julia Ann age 20. Daughters Sarah E. age 3 and Margaret C, age 1.

Death Records of Carroll Co VA for 1887. Catharine Mabry. Died 9 Mar 1887 of consumption. Age 52 years. Parents unknown. Green B. Mabry, informant and husband.

Churchwell is listed on the1900, 1911 and 1912 Civil War Pension Lists for Carroll Co. He served in Co I, 50th Regt, Virginia Infantry, Capt. Poage's Company.
Muster Card on Fold3.com states that he enlisted 25 June 1861 at Wytheville for 12 months. He was marked Present. Remarks: Fiffes [sic] for Regiment.
Ancestry.com. From the VA Regimental Histories Series. Churchwell was a age 33 when he enlisted; a blacksmith. He was born 26 Aug 1829, died 15 May 1914 in Carroll Co, VA. He was mustered out of the service, 15 Dec 1862.
Applied for his pension 12 Jul 1900 when he was age 71. He was a resident of Laurel Fork in Carroll Co. and was disabled by reason of old age, bodily infirmity, and suffering by reason of continual tendency to constipation. He believed he was entitled to receive $15 annually. He signed the application with his mark.
