Isham enlisted in Co F, 4th VA Reserves on 16 May 1864 at Hillsville, VA. He was transferred to Co K on 24 Nov in Dublin VA and was still on the company records 27 Jan 1865.
The family is on the 1880 census in Carroll Co, Laurel Fork District, but moved to Pulaski County, near Hiwassee sometime soon after that.

Isham & Mary lived with their children in their old age. When Mary died in 1929 they were living with their daughter Samantha and her husband John T. Linkous, near Cambria, Montgomery Co, VA. Later Isham lived with his daughter Naomi and son-in-law Jasper Nunn. Both are interred in the Linkous plot at Belmont Christian Church Cemetery in Montgomery Co VA.
The 1930 Census tells a bit different story. Living in Hiwassee, Pulaski Co, VA on Lead Mine Rd.

Isham Spence died 21 Jan 1933, Hiwasee Dist, Pulaski Co, VA, of acute nephritis. He was born 19 Apr 1846 in Carroll Co VA. He was widowed, wife was listed as Francis "Brance". His father was Eli Spence, b. VA; his mother ____ Jackson, b. VA. The informant was J. T. Spence of Hiwassee. He was buried Montgomery Co on Jan 23rd.
Isham is buried Belmont Community Cemetery, Belmont, Montgomery, VA. Said born 19 Apr 1847, d. 21 Jan 1933. Son of Eli Spence and Martha Ellen Jackson.
