Samuel Wilson

( - Bef Oct 1833)

Early Wilson court records in Logan Co include the following:
27 Jan 1795, Deed from Wm & Tabitha Campbell to Robert Wilson was recorded at the County Court Session.
25 Aug 1795 Samuel Wilson registered his stock mark.
26 Jul 1796 Samuel Wilson appointed overseer of the road from the courthouse, leading towards the Green Co courthouse.
27 Dec 1796 Samuel Wilson sitting as court justice. Daniel McGoodwin appt overseer of the road in room of Samuel Willson; Willson to provide hands.
11 Jul 1797 Samuel Wilson present as justice. Sale bill from Joshua Cates to Saml Wilson presented.

Early Tax Lists:
1794 - Reuben Ewing's List. James Wilson was taxed on 150 acres and 2 slaves.
1795 - Reuben Ewing's List. Samuel Wilson was listed as a white male over 21; no property. James Wilson still claimed 2 slaves and some 15 horses, including a stud horse.
1796 - James Herndon, Commissioner. Samuel Wilson has 200 acres on Licking Crk. James Wilson appears twice - once with horses & cattle but no land. The 2nd James Wilson [Red River] seems to be the one previously on the list with a slave, 15 horses including a stud horse. There is also a John Wilson with 5 slaves, horses & cattle but no land listed.
1797 - Chatham Ewing, Commissioner - Samuel Wilson again has no land listed, 1 slave, 1 horse. James Wilson has 1 slave, 18 horses, but no land. Matthew Wilson is listed with 2 horses, nothing else.
1799 - Chatham Ewing. Samuel Wilson listed with 200 acres on Muddy R, another 50 acres on the Muddy, and 268 acres on Lick Crk in Mason Co. James Wilson has 100 acres on the Red River, entered by himself; still has 6 horses. Matthew Wilson listed only with 1 white male over 21. A Solomon Wilson has himself, 1 horse.
1800 - Chatham Ewing. Samuel Wilson lists 232 acres on Muddy R, entered by Thomas Barbee and 268 acres on Licking Crk in Mason Co, entered by Elizabeth Edmonson. He had 2 slaves, 3 horses. James Wilson was listed with 454 acres on the Muddy R, entered by Alexander Ewing. John Wilson had 200 acres on Drakes Crk. Solomon Wilson, 1 horse.
Another James with 100 acres on Red River, 5 horses.

George D. Blakey states that Samuel Wilson was one of the early settlers, and was for many years the County Surveyor. He was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

In 1820, Samuel was already over age 45, but apparently Margaret was in the 26-45 age category. 2 males between 16-26, 2 10-16, and one under 10. 1 female 16-26, 4 females under 10. [probably Eliza, Louisa, Virginia & Maria] The numbers of young children, and the younger age of Margarent would lead me to suspect possibly more than one wife for Samuel Wilson.

In 1830, Samuel and a female were both age 60-70 leading to the possibility of an error in the age of Margaret in 1820, or multiple wives. It's doubtful that a lady age 60 in 1830 would have had 5 children under 10 in 1820 [they would have all been born in her 40's]. Others in the household in 1830 include 2 males, aged 20-30 [there were 2 10-16, 10 years earlier]. Other females were 2 aged 20-30, 2 aged 15-20, 1 10-15, and 1 5-10. Possibly grandchildren were in the home in either census, too.

Samuel Wilson's will and the division of his lands are confusing, but since the latter took place some five years after the probate, some of the heirs had died.
