Benjamin Cleveland

(26 May 1738 - 15 Oct 1806)

Benjamin Cleveland moved to Surry Co NC about 1768, near the Yadkin River. He served with Howe's Regt, NC Troops and was a Col. in the Battle of Kings Mountain. He had a reputation for brutality and inhumanity in war and was called the "Terror of the Tories". He moved his family to the Tugaloo River Valley where he purchased 3000 acres of land - this was in Franklin Co GA at the time, but later was ceded to South Carolina. Benjamin married Mary Graves about 1758, daughter of William & Sarah Graves.
