John Cleveland was bpatized 24 Aug 1714 in Abingdon Parish, Gloucester Co VA. Parents were Alexander Cleveland & Mary Mildred "Milly" Presley. One researcher gives place of death as Orange Co VA; another states that he died St. Thomas Parish, Essex Co VA at the home of a daughter.

John moved to Orange Co VA prior to 1734; he was overseer of the roads from Piney Mountain Run to the ridge between Blue Run and Petty's Crek on 17 Feb 1735. His will is dated 1 Nov 1778 and was proved 26 Nov 1778 and is in the Oragne Co VA WB 3, p.1. Names nine of his children but omitted Larkin. Children were Mary, Benjamin, John Jr., Elizabeth "Betty", Robert, Reuben, Jeremiah, Larkin, and Martha [this is 9 children and includes Larkin]. Three of the sons, Col. Benjamin, Lt. Larkin, & Rev. John were in the battle at King's Mountain and all moved to the new county of Franklin GA following the Revolution.
