John Crawford

(Abt 1701 - )

Memorials of the Crawford Family says that John was deceased before his father wrote his will. His father willed him several slaves he had had in his possession for sometime, then later mentions that John is deceased and his children are to receive his share (that part doesn't seem to be in any transcript of the will that I have seen...)

On April 29, 1735, John Crawford gained a land grant for 400 acres on both sides of Ducking Creek in what was then Hanover County, VA. (This area became a part of Louisa County in 1742)
On June 5, 1736, John gained a land grant for 3546 acres on both sides of Little Saylor's Creek in Amelia County, VA.

John left Virginia for the Carolinas about 1743. He acquired land in Anson County, NC before moving to Craven County, NC. The northern part of Craven County later became Chesterfield County which is just south of Anson County.

The 1751 Tax List for Craven County, SC shows John Crawford had ten slaves and had extensive land holdings on both sides of the Pee Dee River. He had two pair of oxen and owned a ferry and two large boats. He also had a store in Cheraw. It appears from his will that these land holding extended into North Carolina as well.

In 1755 he was appointed Justice of the Peace and in 1757 he was a signer on a petition for a County Court for the northen part of Craven County.

From the 1761 will of David Crawford: "Item, I give to my son John Crawford six negros, which he has had in his possession a considerable time, they are to him and his heirs forever."

Will of John Crawford is taken from microfilm # 0023474, S. C. Charlestown - Probate Records Wills v. 9-10, 1760-1767, LDS Family History Center Page 74:
