DESCENDANTS OF HENRY LEDBETTER
OF BRUNSWICK COUNTY, VIRGINIA
1. Henry Ledbetter. Among the many grants of land in Brunswick County the following will show that Henry, William and Richard Ledbetter together with George Walton (first Justice in the County, 1732) all lived on adjoining places. They were brothers or closely related:
Oct. 31, 1726. Henry Ledbetter was granted 240 acres on south side of Meherrin River.
Oct. 31, 1726. William Ledbetter (whose wife was Frances) was granted 340 acres on south side of Meherrin River at the Rattlesnake Swamp. (They sold this land May 28, 1754.)
Oct. 31, 1726. Richard Ledbetter was granted 320 acres on south side of Meherrin River at the corner of William Ledbetter's line on both sides of Rattlesnake Creek. This Richard, whose wife was named Hanna, had a land grant Sept. 16, 1740 on White Oak Swamp adjoining George Walton and Henry Ledbetter.

Will Book No. 3 records Henry Ledbetter's will dated Sept. 23, 1749 as follows:
WILL OF HENRY LEDBETTER OF BRUNSWICK COUNTY
In the name of God, Amen. I, Henry Ledbetter of Brunswick Co., Virginia, knowing the following uncertainty of human life and being now in perfect mind and memory do make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner and form following: -- Item, I give and bequeath to my daughter Elizabeth Walton one mulatto girl, Lucy. One negro boy, Hercules. I give and bequeath to my son, Charles Ledbetter, one negro named Moile, one negro bop James and one ship-saw. I give and bequeath to my son, Henry Ledbetter, two negro boys, Abraham and Cato. I give and bequeath to my son, Drury Ledbetter, one negro named Daniel and one negro named Amaca. I also give him 240 acres of land by Patern whereon I now live and a survey of 400 acres adjoining to him and his heirs forever only leaving my loving wife Edith Ledbetter the use of it. I give to my loving wife Edith Ledbetter the residue of my Estate not heretofore mentioned but of what or quality so ever. Lastly I do hereby nominate and appoint my loving wife, Edith and Isaac Rowe Walton Executors of this my last will and testament.
Hereby revoking and disannuling any wills by me heretofore made. As witness to my hand this 23 day September in the year of our Lord Christ 1749.

After Henry Ledbetter's death Edith married Henry Britt who died in Brunswick Co. -- will dated 1765.

Wife: Edy. Wife's sons: Charles and Henry LEDBETTER.
Brother: John. Brother's son: Henry.

Henry Britt of Brunswick County in Meherrin Parish.
To Henry Britt, son of my brother John Britt a Negro woman named Rose.
To John Britt, son of my brother John Britt all my wearing apparel
To Henry Ledbetter, son of my wife Edy, part of land the upper side of the Branch that ___ my plantation. I also give to Henry Ledbetter after his mother's decease the plantation whereon I now live and Negro Boy Tom.
To Charles Ledbetter, son of my wife Edy 100 acres of land I bought of George Sims.
All my debts to be paid out of my estate
To my wife Edy, Negro boy Tom during her life and the use of the plantation whereon I now live. Also all my other estate of Negroes, stock, household good to her disposing.
Wife Edy Britt and son her son Henry Ledbetter, Executors of my last Will.
