1820 Census had both a Joseph Chaffin Sr [this man's uncle] and Joseph Chaffin. Joseph was age 16-26. There was no spouse listed, but 4 children under age 10, 2 boys and 2 girls. The enumerated must have failed to place a tick mark for Nancy.

Joseph said to be the son of Abner Chaffin. The land of Benjamin Fox was adjacent to Abner's in Jackson Co.

1850 Census; Dist #1, Jackson Co TN, p.159b, Household 8: Joseph age 47, b. NC [Joseph was probably 57 instead], Nancy age 56, b. VA, Fox C. age 21, Almire, age 18, and Narvie, age 16. Living next door was William, age 29, married to Barbara J. age 25 with 4 children. In household 7 beginning on the previous page was Abner Chaffin, age 31, wife Elizabeth of the same age with 6 children. William and Abner are likely sons of Joseph & Nancy. Another possible son was a Martin Chaffin, age 37 who was in Dist 11. His wife was Jane and there were 6 children. A Benjamin Chaffin found in Dist 4 is listed in other places as a son.

Benj. Chaffin in 1860 listed as age 46. Wife given was Polly age 35. Nancy age 21, William age 20, John age 16, Malinda age 14, Ann 11, Martha 3 or 5. It would seem Rebecca Lovell died and Benjamin remarried to a Polly. Joseph Chaffin age 67 lives with Benjamin so Nancy is apparently deceased. Almira age 28, probably Benjamin's younger sister and James Stafford age 14 is also in the household.
